I’m watching The Music Man (1964) and realized that I never really followed up #onhere about my brief foray into the world of barbershop harmony a few years back.
I went to 2 or 3 weekly rehearsals at the local-ish chapter of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America and spend a fair amount of time practicing baritone parts in my car, and it was pretty neat. Lovely folks and a good vibe… but half the repertoire is modern stuff (The Elton John song from The Lion King, for example) and the main reason I was interested was the hackneyed old-timey stuff.
Also, there was an expectation of showing for performances at various local events etc. and that’s more of a commitment than I was looking for, for music I wasn’t into.
Still, I might reach out again at some point if I can establish up front that I’d like to participate but generally won’t show up to sing the star spangled banner at local ball games
